Welcome to the skiing resort of Ochsengarten & Kuehtai. Family Schoepf is managing the hut summer and winter. They offer hot dishes all day round, spoiling their guests with delicatessen of the region. 

The Balbach hut offers three rooms for accommodation. Two dormitories caring for 12 and 5 persons plus a single room with three beds. There is also a extra tiny hut nearby the house, with separate dormitory sleeping 5 more. 

Just in front of the hut is a very big sunny deck, entertaining you with unbeatable mountain views. In the evenings, the cozy, rustic lounge makes your stay with us an unforgettable memory. This so called 'Almwirtschaft' (founded in 1933 for cheese production) is easy to reach by walking there on a wide gravel road.  It takes you one hour from the main road turnoff in Ochsengarten, short before the Balbacher Hof.

Alternatively you can use the gondola ride from Oetz to Hoch-Oetz and then walk downhill within a 20 minutes to the  Balbachalm. Please note, that the gondola closes down in summer at 4pm. Summer season is end of May to October annually.

Relax and enjoy the wonderful views on the sunny deck, the friendly staff will spoil you with nice food of the region. In fact, we are famous for our 'Kaesspatzeln' (little cheese noodle dumplings, served with salad).

We also care for your children, just next to the sunny terrace is our playgrounds.

Directions to Balbach hut:

• From Germany use Autobahn A7 Fuessen/Reutte or Garmisch/Griessen A95 direction to the 'Fernpass'. From Imst follow the signposts towards Oetztal on the B171. Approx. 9 km after Imst, you will get to the Oetztal turnoff roundabout. Please turn right and follow the signposts towards the village of Oetz. 

  • Alternatively: Garmisch-Partenkirchen (A95) via Mittenwald & Zirler Berg then B171 via Telfs and Silz to Oetztal-Bahnhof and Oetz). 

  • Or Motorway A8 - Munich>Rosenheim>Kufsetein>Innsbruck>Bregenz, exit Oetztal.

  • From Switzerland/Arlberg: Motorway - Bregenz via Landeck exit Oetztal.

• In the village of Oetz, there are several ways reaching the Balbach hut:

  • Using the gondola ride until 4pm. Just drive through the village in Oetz an park your vehicle at the big parking site. Get your gear into a backpack, buy the return ticket and get lifted to Hoch-Oetz (2020m). From there it is a nice walk downhill to the Balbach hut.

  • Drive your vehicle to Ochsengarten/Kuehtai. This takes you 15 minutes more from the turnoff to the left in Oetz. Park your car there and commence your hike to the hut. 

  • If you have called Georg or Maria in the Alm in advance, he will come to the meeting point in Ochsengarten and load your luggage into his vehicles (4 x 4 and minibuses). He will charge you 10.00 EURO for each time going up and down to your car again. 

  • Taxi Tipotsch in Oetztal-Bahnhof (Tel. +43  (0)5266-88216) is also servicing transfers to the hut. Just order with us.
