Areal picture Augsburg Eiskanal - Olympic course 1972

The Olympic white-water course in Augsburg was built for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, a 700 meter long white water course with a drop of approx. 5 meters. An enormous concrete channel, designed those days by MAN, Rudolf Diesel's own Augsburg company, costing taxpayers 15 millions D-Mark.

Artificial obstacles such as the " Sugercone " or " Moby  Dick " and the well-known water-hydraulic formations as the " Washing Machine", " Spindryer " and the " Zoom Flume " were created. The ice channel is probably the safest white-water course in the World as there are no sharp rock edges or boulders. The grading varies between II and IV- WW and is therefore ideal for Kayaking and Rafting of all age's. Its diverted clean waters from River Lech peak in July/August with temperatures of 20 degree Celsius.

The World renowned course is the training site of the National German Kayak Slalom and Rafting Team. The German Rafting championships took place here between 1997-2011. Observe the World Champions and Olympic winners (1992 Spain, 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney, Bejing 2008) during their daily training workouts. This sport requires enormous strength and skill and is a genuine challenge for all sport fans!

P.S.  The 'ice channel' Eiskanal does not get its name from a bobsled run, but as a diversion for drift ice in the winter, keeping the ice away from the turbines of the Augsburg water companies.
