Costa Rica, compared to as " Switzerland Central America " are proud to offer it's nature to the whole world. With a long tradition of democracy and peace (the army was abolished 50 years ago) its friendly population the country has the most national parks (in proportion to it's land mass) world-wide.

In September 1998 the CAMEL CHALLENGE Rafting World Championships took place in Costa Rica, on the rivers Reventazon (WW Class V) and Pacuare (WW Class IV). Reason enough for us to organise a program in this unspoiled country of natural beauty. Due to it's geographical location, the high-lands in Costa Rica offers many advantages for white water Rafting. Constant winds from the Caribbean and Pacific brings rain to the country almost everyday of the year. The volcanic mountains, Arenal, Irazu, Poaz and Chirripo, which are all over 3000 meters high. The rain water is always warm and the water temperature in the rivers is over 20°C.

We raft in the Tropics, 10 degrees north, approximately 1000 km from the equator. Leave your thick neoprene suits at home, here you only need shorts and T-shirts, eventually a 2mm shorty for the windy days. During the rainy season it is possible that the river levels rise rapidly overnight and some sections become almost impassable to raft.

15-Day Program

Day 1

 Daily flight with United Airlines (Boeing 767) from Munich (departure 1.00pm) London or Frankfurt via Washington D.C. 2-3 hour stop at Dulles airport and then connecting flight to San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica via Mexico City. Alternatively with Iberia from London, Munich or Frankfurt (Boeing 747) to San Jose via Madrid and Miami.
Arrival late in the evening / 12:00 Customs clearance, transfer to the hotel " Rithmo del Caribe " in the middle of San Jose. We have 8 hours time difference during the European summer time. The hotel is run by Thomas, a German, and his Costa Rican wife.
Day 2 Aclimatization An early morning start from the hotel (no problem at 5.00am, due to jet-lag). At home it is already 1.00pm. Transfer to Turrialba. Lunch in the centre of Turrialba, check in the hotel Interamericana and afterwards the Rafting tour on the upper Reventazon River, the Tucurrique section (WW Class III).
Day 3-5 Collection from the hotel Interamericana and a 1-hour journey to the put-in on the Pacuare River. Safety talk, waterproof stowing of the luggage. Beginning of the 3-Day Trips including Rafting, hike through the jungle, bathing below waterfalls, Wildlife.....
Day 6 Return journey to San Jose. Check in at the hotel " Rithmo del Caribe ". One day Sightseeing. Collect off-road vehicles late in the evening.
Day 7 At the break of dawn we leave for Limon on the Caribbean coast (approx. 2 hours travel time) for a " Lazy day " at the Beach in 30° C warm water. Return back to San Jose and the hotel " Rithmo del Caribe " in the evening
Day 8-10 Collection for the 3-day hiking tour Monte Sky Mirador. Monte Sky is a 5000 hectare private sanctuary with views over the Orosi valley and the volcano’s of Barva, Irazu and Turrialba. This area is used mainly as a tree plantation area called "Jardin de la Vida"(garden of life). Accommodation and food in a 75 year old country house in the area.
Day 11-13 Sea-kayaking on the Pacific coast. Drive to Puntarenas in the early morning. Travel with the ferry over the gulf of Nicoya to Playa Paquera. Drive on to Curu National Wildlife Park. Briefing on the paddle techniques of Sea-kayaking. In the afternoon some practical exercises before paddling from Curu to Playa Queresa. The next two days we can hike, paddle, snorkel or surf. Return trip to the ferry in the afternoon. Transfer to Turrialba, to the hotel inter-America.
Day  14 Rafting Highlight. The tour on the Rio Reventazon on the Peralta section from Angostura to Peralta. 16 kilometres of Class V white water, The 1998 World Championship course!!! In the evening return journey to San Jose, Evening meal. Overnight accommodation in the hotel " Ritmo del Caribe "
Day 15 Return flight to Germany at 6.00am!! Arrival in London, Munich or Frankfurt one day later, at 8.00am (minus 8 hours time difference).

The following are inclusive in the program:-midday and evening meals in the Camps. While during the transfers only the breakfast is contained in the travel price (day 1.2.6.7.11.14). The price for the meals in Costa Rica are very cheap! Airport Departure Tax at San Jose/USD 20, -.

  • All meals are incl. in the package, except on the activity days where a transfer is included (Day 1,2,6,7,11,14) breakfast only. The price for the meals in Costa Rica is exceptionally cheap!
