Rafting in Greece 2008

In Greece the season begins in early spring, February 2008. We recently undertook an expedition there and after scouting the whole area we finalised a special rafting/outdoor package and included it into our program for next year.
Raftiing on the Arahtos in Greece Our destination is the North West of Greece around the city of Ioannina, with the rivers Arahtos and Aoos offering light-middle white-water over a 20 km section of river. In Spring the snow melt from the well known ski region of the Greek Alps creates high water levels which runs through unspoilt landscape. The only take-out once underway through the Arahtos Gorge are approximately halfway through the tour where we stop for lunch and 11 km further down river at the end of the tour. Between the start and finish are no trails, no roads and no one to cross our path!
We work together with the local Rafting company, Alpinezone were we use the base and their infrastructure. The tours are exclusively led by our own guides and the use of our own equipment. (minimum number of participants 6 persons per Raft and Canyoning group)! Additional local Greek Guides support the tours.

Rafting and Canyoning Long-Weekend in Greece 4 Days/3 Nights.

  • Thursday: Departure
    • Departure from Munich/Stuttgart/Frankfurt or Berlin in the late afternoon with Olympic Airways.
    • Arrival in Athens (flying time 2 hours) connecting flight to Ioannina. Arrival late evening.
    • Check-in to accommodation followed by a traditional Greek greetings dinner.
  • Friday: Rafting!

     

    • Breakfast served until 9 o'clock.
    • Transfer with minibuses to the Rafting start at the Arahtos. Duration approx. 30-40 minutes.
    • Preparation for the tour and safety briefing
    • First section of the Arahtos 9 km. Degree of difficulty WW IV, Rapids vary during the tour between WW 2 and WW 3 (Breathtaking views of the valley)
    • Break for Lunch at the half way point at approx. 12 o'clock. The Lunch is served in an exclusive Picnic AREA. Beverages, all inclusive.
    • Continuation of the Tour around 2 o'clock we head down river towards Plaka and the take-out point.
    • The last section of the tour takes us through a narrow gorge, WW 2-3 Just wide enough to paddle the rafts through.

Rafting on the Aoos in Greece
  • Arrival at the famous elbow bridge in Plaka approx. 4 o'clock, this is where the peace treaty was signed in the Greek/Turkish war 1912, now a national Monument.
  • Small break for snacks and loading the rafts.
  • Return transfer with minibuses back to our accommodation. Duration approx. one hour.
  • Traditional Greek evening meal, followed by a chance to visit the bars and experience the night life in town...
  • Saturday: Rafting & Canyoning!
    • Breakfast served until 9 o'clock.
    • Depart North with the minibuses to the famous rock formation Timfi.
    • Rafting tour on the Aoos.Duration approx.1hour.
    • break for a small snack.
    • 4-5 hour Canyoning tour with 21 abseil sections. Also suitably for beginners!
    • Traditional Greek lunch in the neighbouring mountain village.
    • Return journey/transfer to our accommodation. Duration approx. 45 minutes.
    • Traditional Greek evening meal, followed by a chance to visit the bars in Ionainna.
  • Sunday: Culture day
    • Breakfast served until 9 o'clock.
    • Visit the world-famous stalactite caverns (length 1000 meters) in the neighbouring village of Ioaninna.
    • Departure for Athens around 12 o'clock, arrival 13:30
    • A flying visit to the local beach whilst waiting for the connecting flight (4 hours)
    • Return flight to Germany approx. 17:30, arrival in Munich/Berlin/London at 19:30-20.45.
